QuestionInsurance Question  I have a Rhode Island driver's license. I am currently in the military and living In California. I was just charged with a DUI and California took away my "priveledge" to drive. However, my license is not suspended anywhere but in California because they can't suspend a license issued by another state (and my driving record in Rhode Island is still clean). Will I have to file an sr-22 even though my actual driving record according to my state of residence is clean?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

The DUI will be applied to your Rhode Island motor vehicle report regardless of the state in which you received it. It may take some time for this violation to appear on your driving record; however, it will be on there eventually. As for the sr-22, you should only be forced to carry this if you did not meet the state's mandatory liabilty limits at the time of the violation. Also, most states where you apply for your driver's license (or its renewal) will honor another state's request - if that other state wants you to get an sr-22.
