QuestionInsurance Question  Is there a chart or other instrument out there that indicates the amount of insurance points someone is assessed for different motor vehicle violations, and how much each insurance point costs? (It would really help when someone needs to make a determination of whether to accept a 'no points' ticket with a high fine, versus a 'small points' ticket with a very low fine.)

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Some states have insurance laws governing when and why auto insurers can change policyholders' premiums; often, insurers are not allowed to raise your rates after just one speeding ticket or other citation. Different companies have different practices when it comes to raising premiums. Some companies will consider the severity of your violation and raise your rates accordingly; others will raise rates a specific amount per violation. As a result, you are going to have to contact your insurance company to see how they determine which violations are charged what points.
