QuestionInsurance Question  I have motorcycle insurance only, and do not own a car. I borrowed my friend's car and caused a minor accident (small dent in other vehicle). How can/should this be handled to minimize cost and protect my friend from increased insurance rates, etc.?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

The first step after an accident is to notify the police. They will determine fault, etc.

After that, you and your friend will need to notify his insurance company - promptly.

Even though you do not want to use his insurance company, they need to be notified to protect their financial interests with this accident in case the other party wants compensation for the damaged property. He can tell them that you don't want them to pay out because you don't want his rates increased.

When you are finished speaking to your friend's insurance company, you will need to contact your insurance company - promptly. If you have 'property damage liability' and 'bodily injury liability' coverages on your motorcycle policy, it may apply to this accident; however, these coverages will probably be 'excess' to your friend's insurance coverages. Typically, motorcycle coverage does NOT extend to automobiles, but some states are changing those laws.

After that, you may want to talk to the other party and see if you can fix the vehicle without any help from the insurance companies. (If the other party chooses to settle this without the help of the insurance companies, get the other person to sign a notorized statement of acceptance of the settlement.)

If you choose to speak to the other party, DO NOT circumvent the authorities nor the insurance companies. There is no easier answer, but good luck.
