QuestionInsurance Question  I have a daughter who will get her license next month. Can she purchase her own car insurance? If not, at what age can she?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Insurance companies usually allow people to purchase insurance at fifteen or sixteen. However, until they are eighteen years old, they are considered minors. Since an insurance policy is a legally binding contract, a minor usually cannot sign it alone; otherwise, the policy could be "void." As a result, a parent or legal guardian is usually required to sign the paperwork with the minor. Because the parents or legal guardians are resposible for the minor's actions, it's a good idea to have a them sign the paperwork with the minor. That way, the parents or legal guardians can make sure the minor purchases enough insurance to protect their own financial interests. Once the person turns eighteen years old, s/he is responsible for his/her own decisions and actions. As a result, s/he can sign his/her own paperwork.
