QuestionInsurance Question  My father was recently killed in an accident in Texas. The man who hit him was insured - as was my father. But the other man was at fault. Because there was a death, how do the insurance companies handle this?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

I would suggest you seek legal advice for this situation. From what I understand, Texas does not offer "personal injury protection" which carries a death benefit. Your father's family will probably have to look into the other party's "bodily injury liability" to see if it will help with this matter. Now, you will want to see if your father purchased "uninsured/underinsured motorist" coverage. This will cover the insured, the insured members of his household and his passengers for injuries, damages or death caused by the negligence of a person with no or insufficient insurance. Also, some people, when they purchase their insurance, also chose to purchase an accidental death plan and possibly a life insurance plan. So, you will want to contact your father's insurance agent to see if he chose to purchase any of these extra insurance coverages.
