QuestionInsurance Question  I live in California and want to know what happens if you are cited for a traffic violation and don't have insurence yet the officer gives you a fixit ticket to go to court and prove you did have insurance when the violation occured? Will I be fined or lose my license? If I am fined about how much will it be?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Being caught driving without auto insurance could cost you twice as much as one year of a basic car insurance policy. Failing to establish proof of financial responsibility, a violation of California Vehicle Code, may result in fines up to $500 plus penalties, impoundment of the vehicle (for which the owner must pay all storage and tow charges), and driver’s license suspension.

That being said when an officer gives you a fix-it ticket it is also typically a notice to appear. So your best bet is to purchase insurance and show proof of the newly purchased policy to the court. At this point it will be up to the court to decide if they are content or if they will access you a fine or suspension.
