QuestionInsurance Question  Someone in my household who is not a family member drove my uninsured, unregisterd car without my permission and got a ticket. I received a letter to appear in court for expired plates and insurance. I have full coverage on the car I actually use. I did not register or insure the other car because i do not drive. Do I need insurance on car that I am not driving or plan to register?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

It matters what state you are in, but the law doesn't have any "exceptions" for inoperable vehicle. Typically you need to register and insure (basic insurance) a vehicle even if it is just sitting.

Your example is a reason why the laws still require coverage and insurance.

Since you will have to appear in court, you will need to get the car registered and insured.
