QuestionInsurance Question  My suv was stolen during Hurricane Katrina. I purchased my suv three weeks before the storm. My first payment was not due until three weeks later. I was not able to get to get a police report. (Because, there were no police to which to report it.) I filed a claim with my insurance company. Will I receive anything from the insurance company, myself, even if I had a lien on my suv (and gap coverage). I did not put any money down.

Ultimately, you will need to discuss this situation with your insurance company and your vehicle's lienholder.

In general, your insurance company should be able to let you know how they will handle your auto insurance claim.

In general, however, a vehicle depreciates in value - immediately - when you drive it from the dealership. The GAP insurance will cover the difference from that depreciated value to the amount you owe on the vehicle.

The payout from your insurance company will go to your lienholder and not you.
