QuestionInsurance Question  I received a ticket in NYS for driving 24 mph over the speed limit. I have a CT drivers license. I paid the fine and am now being charged $100.00 a year for the next 3 years for a "Driver Responsibility Assessment". If I ignore this totally unfair assessment I do realize that I will not be able to drive in the state of NY for at least the next three years and I'm fine with that but will there be any repurcussions on me here in CT?

The State of New York has deemed it necessary a driver must pay the driver responsibility assessment if after November 18, 2004 you are convicted of an alcohol-related traffic violation, you are convicted of a drug-related traffic violation, a DMV hearing determines that you refused a chemical test or you received six or more points on your driver record during a period of 18 months. The different violations are assessed different fees to pay for three years.

If you receive a statement from the NY DMV that instructs you to pay a driver responsibility assessment, you must pay the assessment. If you do not pay the assessment, the DMV will suspend your driver license, your learner permit, or your driving privileges. Your driver's license being suspended will most likely affect your driving privileges in Connecticut as well. Both states are part of a Driver License Agreement that allows DMVs to share information. Most likely your CT driver's license will be suspended for not paying the assessment in NY but for the specifics of what will happen I would contact your local DMV.
