QuestionInsurance Question  Our son is 20 he has his own car he is on our policy (even though he get a seprate bill). We want him to get his own policy in case he doesn't pay his insurance we won't be liable. We talked to our insurance company. They told us that even if he is put on his own policy and doesn't pay then we are still responsible cause he still lives in our house hold!! That they would add him to our policy. We live in WV.. Do you know if this is correct? That as long as your child lives in your household then he will be on your policy until he moves out?

Insurance companies vary with their guidelines and rules but generally what your auto insurance agent told you is true. Most car insurance companies require you to list everyone in your household with a driver's license on your policy.

Some companies allow you to list all drivers, but then exclude the drivers that will NOT drive a vehicle. Companies are skeptical about this rule because many times they may still be responsible for the risk if there is an accident, even with an excluded driver.

If you want more consumer information regarding how insurance companies work you can contact your the West Virginia Insurance Commission.
