QuestionInsurance Question  We just moved from Massachusetts to Maine and would like to know the requirements needed for us to pass an inspection, so we can receive our cars stickers.

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Maine requires all motor vehicles to undergo a safety inspection once a year. Vehicles that are registered in Cumberland County are also required to undergo an emissions test as well. You can get your motor vehicle inspection completed at a licensed testing station which will be located at a service station, garage or an automobile dealership.

The laws are changing in 2007.

Maine requires all motor vehicles to undergo a safety inspection once a year. Vehicles registered in Cumberland County are also required to undergo an emissions test. Inspections are conducted at automobile dealerships, service stations and garages. There are about 7,500 active licensed inspection mechanics and 2,400 inspection stations.

If you contact Maine's Department of Public Safety, they should be able to provide you with a list of the inspection requirements. You can call (207) 624-9000 or visit their Maine inspection website to find an inspection station near you. The cost should cost between $12.50 and $20.00.
