QuestionInsurance Question  Why is it a law that you must drive with car insurance? And what exactly does that law state about having car insurance?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

All states require motorists to show financial responsibility when driving a motor vehicle. In most states this financial responsibility is proven by purchasing and maintaining at least the minimum required insurance required by their state. In many states there is a minimum amount of bodily injury and property damage liability insurance that must be in place before they can legally drive a car. Other states require even more insurance coverages.

In some states the proof of financial responsibility or insurance must be shown before registering their vehicle, while other states require you to have insurance and check up on you through surveys or will check for proof of insurance when the driver has been in an accident or stopped for a traffic incident and receives a ticket.

At the Insurance Information Institute website (www.iii.org) you can find a list of what each state currently requires as the minimum insurance or what is required in means of financial responsibility.
