QuestionInsurance Question  If I am leaving the country for four months and will not be using my car, can I get a reduction in my premium, or are there certain types of coverage I can stop for this period and then resume when I return?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

In most states you must always carry a mandatory minimum amount of insurance coverages on a vehicle. Some states will allow for coverage to be suspended as will some insurance companies. There can be hassles associated with this though of stopping and then starting back up an insurance policy.

A few states allow for the temporary surrender of your vehicle plates. This means your car is will be without registration and thus do not have to carry insurance in these states. The problem with this is if your car is damaged or stolen during this time period, you will have to no coverage to file a claim through.

You should discuss with your insurance company if there are any coverages that they can advise you on reducing or taking off of your policy while you are out of the country to thus lower your rates during this time period. If you want to get a quote for these different coverages you can start right now.
