Drivers in Tennessee are not required by law to have liability insurance in order to register a vehicle or obtain a drivers license; however, all drivers are subject to the state's Financial Responsibility Law. This Financial Responsibility law is from 1977 and requires a driver to provide evidence of complying with the law by either documentation of an insurance car, binder or declaration page of a policy from an insurance company that is authorized to do business in TN.
If the driver does not show proof of insurance they can show a certificate from the Department of Safety noting that a cash deposit or bond has been posted in the amount required of them. Or the driver must show evidence that they are qualified as a self-insurer. Most people comply with the Financial Responsibility Law of 1977 by purchasing an insurance policy to the liability limits of 25/50/10 set by the state.
