Typically you will need insurance in the country and state in which your vehicle is registered, so even if it is possible to obtain Canadian auto insurance you need to contact your DMV to see if your state will allow you to continue the registration on your vehicle if you only have Canadian insurance on it.
As for Canadian insurance, the requirements for car insurance vary depending on the providence or territory in which you plan to live. I would suggest contacting the Department or Ministry of Transportation in the area in which you are moving to and find out more information about insuring vehicles in that region. The website for Transport Canada, www.tc.gc.ca, has a list of these transportation agencies and their web pages.
The Basics of Canadian Car Insurance is an article in our Learning Center that could be helpful for you to read before your move.
Comment Update: We do not believe it is possible the way you are doing it. We know of no Canadian company that will insure a vehicle that is NOT registered in Canada. If you can register the car in Canada it should be possible.
