QuestionInsurance Question  I got a ticket in New York City for disobeying pavement signs, is there a point value for this violation? If there is, will that point system transfer to my New Jersey driving record?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

In New York if you fail to obey a traffic signal, a stop sign or a yield sign and receive a traffic ticket for the violation, it is a 3 point offense. If the ticket was for disobeying a traffic control device or pavement markings it instead would be only a 2 point offense. Both of these point values are for a New York licensed driver.

It appears that you have a New Jersey license. New York State and New Jersey are both part of a Drivers License Compact (DLC) which allows the member states to report out of state tickets back to the state where the person is licensed. As a result of this, NJ ensures that out of state violations become part of your driving record but have decided to assess only 2 points for each out-of-state moving violation.

To get a copy of your New Jersey driving record you can contact the New Jersey Motor Vehicles Commission.
