QuestionInsurance Question  I am living in Rhode Island but have a suspended Florida Class A license. Suspension is for unpaid tickets, i.e. speeding, seat belt, driving on suspended. Once all fines are paid, how do I go about transferring my license to my current state? Will my Class A transfer or will I need to retest? Will I need an SR-22? Do I need to go back to Florida to get it and then transfer?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

In Florida, if you do not pay on traffic citations your license is suspended indefinitely. If you are an out-of-state resident the FL Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles department states that you must pay and send the satisfaction and fee with a letter of residency to the Bureau of Driver Improvement. A clearance letter will be mailed to you.

You should also check with the FL HSMV to make sure your Class A, commercial driver license, is not disqualified due to amount of traffic violations you have received. In Florida, if you have a CDL and 3 traffic violations within 3 years you are disqualified from driving a commercial motor vehicle for 120 days. Two traffic violations within 3 years is a 60 day suspension. After either suspension period you have to pay a fee to restore your CDL.

Once you have restored your license in Florida, you normally would be notified if you needed a SR-22. You can contact the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles to see if to transfer your license to RI you will need to retest and discuss what to do if you do need to obtain a SR22.
