QuestionInsurance Question  I recently filed a claim to have my cracked windshield replaced. I had been planning to switch auto insurance providers. How long do I need to wait after filing a claim with my current auto insurance provider before switching to a new auto insurance company?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Generally, most states allow for you to switch insurance companies whenever you want. If your claim has been paid out for your windshield and it is replaced, the claim is likely finished so you would be able to now shop around for other insurance companies to be insured through.

You will want to have a new car insurance policy in place before canceling your old auto insurance coverage. When switching insurance providers you do not want a gap in insurance. Typically what you need to do to cancel your auto policy is to inform your insurance company in writing of the specific date in which you want the policy canceled.

Some states require that your new insurance agent notify your previous agent of the change in providers and policies. Your insurance company will likely send you cancellation paperwork you will need to sign and return.

You will want to receive confirmation that your cancellation request went through your old insurance company, once your new insurance is in place, so that they do not terminate the policy later for failure of payment. If the old policy would be cancelled this way it would be bad for your credit report.

To find out if your state has any specific requirements when changing auto insurance companies you can check with the state's insurance regulator.
