QuestionInsurance Question  I got a speeding ticket in Virginia for going 84 mph in a 65. Will I get points on my license and will my insurance go up?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

In Virginia, when you are convicted of a traffic violation, the court notifies the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The DMV then posts the conviction to your driving record and assigns demerit points according to the severity of the offense. The DMV will also notify your insurance company upon their request.

In Virginia speeding 15 to 19 mph above the posted speed limit is a 4 point moving violation and can also be termed reckless driving. A conviction of this citation will result in 4 demerit points going onto your license and the conviction remaining on your DMV record for 5 years.

Demerit points remain on your record for 2 years from the date that you commit the offense. The dates that the points are removed from your driving record are not related to the dates that convictions are removed from your record.

Depending on your insurance company's rating system your premiums could go up because of this ticket. You will need to check with your agent to find out for certain and get specific information on your provider's rating system.
