QuestionInsurance Question  I was given a speeding ticket in Virginia for going 15 over. I'm from Tennessee, what will happen to my insurance?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

A speeding ticket in the state of Virginia for going 15 mph over the posted speed limit is a 4 point offense if you have a VA driver's license. In Tennessee, 15 mph in excess of the speed limit is a 3 point moving violation. Because of being from Tennessee, this out of state moving violation may or may not put points onto your TN license.

Tennessee dropped out of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) in 1997 but the state still reports tickets back to your home state and other states can still report moving violations to the TN Department of Safety. You will need to contact this state agency to find out if the VA speeding ticket is on your driving record.

If the speeding ticket shows up your TN driving history, your insurance rates could be affected depending on your insurance company's rating system. You can contact your insurance carrier to find out about their rating system or contact your state's insurance regulator, with whom the insurance company must file their rates with.
