QuestionInsurance Question  I just received a moving violation in NYC for crossing double solid lines. My license is from Massachusetts. Can you tell me how many points MA will assess for this violation in New York?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

It sounds like you received a citation for improper passing which is a 3 point moving violation in New York. The NY DMV Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB) handles non-criminal moving violations that occur in the five boroughs of New York City.

Massachusetts is not a member of the Drivers License compact but the MA Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) has agreements so that the state still shares and receives driving record and violation information with other states. Most offenses committed in other states will be put on your MA driving record and be treated by the RMV as if it occurred in state.

If the MA RMV assesses points for this out of state violation, it would appear that it would be 2 surcharge points since it was a minor traffic law violation. To see if points will be assigned and see if this point total is correct, contact the Massachusetts RMV.
