QuestionInsurance Question  I just accumulated 12 points on my Michigan driving license. Can this result in suspension? How do they determine the number of months to be suspended?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

In Michigan, after you receive 7 or more points on your driver's license you are put in the MI Driver Responsibility Program. This program requires monetary sanctions to be paid by you until your points total goes below 7 points. For 12 points the annual driver responsibility fee appears to be $350.

Reaching 12 points on your Michigan license has even more sanctions involved with it. You will be required to take part in a Driver Assessment Reexamination. This reexamination determines your ability to safely operate a vehicle and if any licensing controls should be imposed.

As part of the reexamination process you must pass vision and knowledge tests and may be required to take part in a road test as well. After your assessment takes place then your license can be restricted, suspended or revoked. If your driving privileges are taken away you have the right to appeal.

Information about when and how to reinstate your license should be given to you when you are notified about any licensing controls placed on you. A suspension can last from days to months while a revocation of your license means you must wait 1 to 5 years before you are eligible to reapply for a license.

To find out information on how many months suspension you might receive or on the reexamination process contact the Driver Services division of the Michigan Department of State.
