QuestionInsurance Question  I have been driving on my parent's car insurance for the past two years and the other week I crashed and totaled the car. Now I'm buying a new car and getting my own insurance on it. When applying for insurance they ask if I have been involved in an accident in the past five years so do I have to say yes since it wasn't actually my insurance involved in the claim? Or do I have to say yes because it was me driving during the accident?

It would appear that you are thinking of two separate issues as one. There are claims history for car accidents and then the driving record on the accident. While the claims record for this accident might be under your parent's insurance, it would be your driving record that would list the accident under your name since you were the driver.

When filling out an application or renewal information form it is best to give as accurate information as possible. So when applying for car insurance and are asked if you have been involved in an accident in the past 5 years you should in the affirmative, that yes you have.

Most states' Department of Motor Vehicles list on a person's driving record any accident they have been involved in within the last so many years (time period differs per state laws). So the insurance company is asking you information on accidents, violations, etc and then will check with the DMV's motor vehicle record on you to make sure the data matches up.

If you leave off information on an insurance form in order to mislead or obtain lower rates, many states will find this to be a form of insurance fraud. At the very least if you give incorrect information the insurance company's quote for you will be inaccurate and have to be recalculated after they obtain the corrected information.
