QuestionInsurance Question  I live in Missouri and recently got pulled over and did not have insurance. What are the penalties for no insurance? I called my old insurance company when I got home and had the insurance started that night will that help?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

It is illegal to drive a motor vehicle in Missouri without automobile liability insurance. Missouri law requires a driver to show proof of insurance to any law enforcement official, upon request, or a traffic ticket will be issued to the driver.

If a MO motorist is convicted of failing to show proof of insurance one of three things can happen to the driver:

  1. The court will send the conviction to the Missouri Driver and Vehicle Services Bureau and it will be entered on the person's driving record. Also 4 points will be assessed against the driving record.
  2. The court may enter an order of suspension. In this case the Driver and Vehicle Services Bureau will monitor the driver to ensure auto liability insurance is being maintained.
  3. The court may enter an order suspending the motorist's driver's license for failing to show proof of insurance. The order will be sent to the Driver and Vehicle Services Bureau at which time the driver will be notified of the suspension of their license.

If your license is suspended, it can be reinstated after the required period when you pay a $20 reinstatement fee and show proof of insurance. Any vehicle driver whose license is suspended for failing to show proof of insurance must maintain insurance on their vehicle for a 3 year period.

Those are the penalties that you could be facing due to driving without insurance. It might help your case that you have had your auto insurance reinstated, to find out for certain contact the court where your ticket for this violation is to be heard or the Missouri DMV.
