QuestionInsurance Question  I live in Virginia but got a speeding ticket in Camden County, Georgia for 95 in a 70 zone (40-6-181). I have an excellent driving record in Virginia. How many points would I receive? Does this have any other effect on my license?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Georgia does not take part in the Drivers License Compact but the GA DMV Driver's Services has determined they will still send citation information for an out of state driver back to their home state's DMV.

The Virginia DMV notes that demerit points will be assessed to a driver's record for traffic convictions occurring out of state. So it would appear that your speeding ticket for 25 mph over the speed limit in Georgia would be reported and put on your record in VA.

The points assigned in Virginia for 25 mph over the posted speed are 6 points and the violation is construed as reckless driving. To find out if GA ticket will be placed on our record as a speeding ticket or reckless driving offense in VA, contact the VA DMV Citizens Services. Their help line is 1-800-435-5137.
