QuestionInsurance Question  I have a North Carolina license, but I'm working in Indiana. A week back I got an IN speeding ticket (my first ticket, I'm 26 years old). I was ticketed for 87 mph in a 55 mph zone. What will be the affect on my license? Will my car insurance increase (my current insurance is in Indiana)? If I change my license from North Carolina to Indiana what could be the consequences?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

In Indiana speeding 25 mph or more over the speed limit is 6 points on a driving record and can be considered reckless driving in some cases. In North Carolina speeding above a speed limit of 55 is a 3 point offense.

Both North Carolina and Indiana are members of the Drivers License Compact, thus Indiana will report to the NCDOT if you are convicted of this speeding ticket. You can contact the NCDOT to find out if they will put this on your North Carolina driving record or assign points for this out of state moving violation.

If you this moving violation conviction is put on your NC driving record than your insurance company will be aware of the citation next time they check your MVR and it could affect your rates. Since your car insurance is in Indiana, even if the ticket is not put on NC driving record, this insurance company might do an expanded search and see the ticket issued to you in Indiana anyway. Find out from your agent about your company's rating system to see if this first traffic ticket will change your rates.

You will need to contact the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles to find out what consequences there would be if you turned your North Carolina driver's license to receive an Indiana license. You likely could not do this until the ticket was taken care of though since your NC license would show an outstanding ticket in Indiana in all probability.
