QuestionInsurance Question  I live in California with my son who is 16. Can his father, who does not live with us, put our son on his insurance policy even though that is not our son's primary residence or does he have to be on my insurance policy since he lives with me?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Generally an insurance company will require you to list all of your licensed household members; this would include your 16 year old son since he primarily lives with you in your residence. His father may be able to add him to his policy to drive his vehicles, but you would still likely need to have him on your policy since he lives with you and will potentially drive your vehicles.

State laws and insurance companies’ guidelines differ though, so contact your insurance agent and explain the situation to see what your insurance provider will require you to do.
