QuestionInsurance Question  My husband received a speeding ticket for 23 over the speed limit in Pennsylvania. How - or will - that ticket affect his Wisconsin drivers license?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

A speeding ticket for going in excess of the speed limit by 16 to 25 mph in Pennsylvania is a 4 point offense. Pennsylvania is a part of the Drivers License Compact, while your home state of Wisconsin is not. However, most states will usually report violation convictions back to other states even if they are not part of the DLC.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, no points are assessed for convictions of traffic offenses from other states but the conviction is entered on your Wisconsin driver record.

If your out of state violation was for something more serious and which Wisconsin statute would have required a mandatory suspension or revocation of your license, such as driving under the influence, the Wisconsin DOT will take action.

In Wisconsin most traffic convictions are kept on your driving record for 5 years. More serious convictions, such as operating while intoxicated (OUI) with a violation date on or after 1989 and certain commercial driving convictions are retained on the WI MVR for life (currently defined as 55 years).
