QuestionInsurance Question  My fiance received two tickets in Louisiana and did not have a LA state license. At the time of the tickets he had a Florida license. Currently it is changing to a different state. Should I pay these tickets, and if I don't what could happen to his license?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Florida, Louisiana and 40 plus other states are members of both the Drivers License Compact (DLC) and Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC). The DLC requires member states to report tickets received by a motorist to the state where the person is licensed.

The NRVC requires States which take part in this agreement to suspend the license of those who get tickets for moving violations in other states and fails to pay or take care of them in some other legal way. So if your fiance does not pay for his Louisiana tickets he received then his drivers license is likely to be suspended.

For example if he still has his Florida license, the FL HSMV will be notified of the LA unpaid tickets and his Florida license will be suspended. To get the suspension stopped he would need to pay the ticket and obtain proof of payment. Typically this would be a receipt with the court seal of the county in which he received the tickets. There then will be a reinstatement fee to get his Florida license valid again.

If his Florida license is suspended when your fiance tries to apply for a license in another state it will likely he will be denied a license there. All states should search the National Driver Register when a person is trying to obtain a license. The NDR is a database which lists drivers whose license are suspended or revoked or have committed a serious traffic violation.

It is best to take care of traffic citation, whether in or out of state, so that driving privileges are not taken away. If either you or your fiance needs auto insurance in the state that you are currently residing, you can get a cheap car insurance quote here.
