QuestionInsurance Question  Is it legal to ride a Honda motorcycle without any insurance coverage in Georgia?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

According to Georgia state law motor vehicle owners and lessees are required to maintain continuous mandatory liability insurance coverage on their vehicle(s) to legally drive the vehicle(s); register and obtain Georgia license plates (tags); and to renew, replace or transfer their existing GA license plates (tags).

Non-motorized vehicles, i.e. trailers and campers, and vehicles exempt from registration in the state of Georgia, i.e. snowmobiles, bicycles, golf carts, etc., do not require insurance coverage.

According to the unannotated Georgia Code (GC) 40-6-11 Part a - a motorcycle is defined as a motor vehicle that traveling on public streets or highways having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and is designed to travel on not more than 3 wheels in contact with the ground but excluding a moped.

Part b of this Code goes on to say that no owner of a motorcycle or any other person, other than a self-insurer as defined in Chapter 34 of Title 33 of the Georgia Code, shall operate or authorize any other person to operate the motorcycle unless the owner has liability insurance on the motorcycle equivalent to that required as evidence of security for bodily injury and property damage liability under Code Section 40-9-37. Any person who violates this subsection shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

So insurance is needed on a motorcycle in Georgia, the same as an auto must have on it, to be legally allowed on the road. These minimum liability limits are 25/50/25. These limit numbers stand for $25,000 of bodily injury liability per person for a total of $50,000 of bodily injury per occurrence and $25,000 of property damage liability per occurrence.
