QuestionInsurance Question  Is it necessary to add new teen driver to my insurance policy? If he just drives occasionally, I was told it isn't necessary to inform insurance company because the car is insured & whoever we give permission to drive, is insured under the policy. This question is for MA?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Drivers under the age of 25 pose the greatest risk to insurers because of their high level of at-fault accidents.

You should notify your agent of the status of any resident of your household. Your policy guidelines will define the next course of action. Some carriers offer coverage when a permit is obtained by a driver, but they don't require the driver to be added.

Other carriers, require them to be listed since the company's coverage is now liable for their actions.

The least expensive option is typically to add your teenager to your existing auto insurance policy. To further lower the costs, make sure the teenager doesn’t have a sports car, a used economy car will generally give you the best rates.
