QuestionInsurance Question  I am looking to add my daughter to my insurance policy while she is a full-time student in British Columbia, Canada, only to find my insurance company would not cover her in Canada. 1) Would your company be able to offer her coverage as my dependent? 2) Would you be able to insure a "rebuilt title"? One of the cars we are interested in purchasing has a rebuilt bumper, but no damage to the frame.

To answer question #1- no, unfortunately the companies we work with would not be able to offer car insurance for your daughter while she is a full-time student in British Columbia, Canada. The insurance companies we work with only extends coverage to the US.

Below is some information though on auto insurance requirements for those living in British Columbia (B.C.). For help on obtaining the Canadian car insurance she will need on the vehicle she will be driving in Canada, I would suggest your daughter seeking help from the student services department of the university she will be attending.

According to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), all B.C. motorists must have Basic Autoplan coverage, no matter what they use their vehicle for. It provides you with the minimum insurance coverage that the law says you need to have to be on the road here.

If you are a full-time student from outside of B.C. who is attending a designated school then you may not need to licence and insure your vehicle here. Instead, you may only need to apply for and obtain a permit to operate your vehicle in B.C. You must obtain the permit within 30 days of your arrival. If you don't already have any insurance, you'll have to buy some as part of the operating permit.

Contact ICBC Inter jurisdictional licensing/Financial Responsibility at (604) 443-4624 or toll-free (B.C. only) at 1-800-665-4336 for more information. Their website is www.icbc.com/insurance. For information on importing a vehicle into B.C. from the United States, contact the Registrar of Imported Vehicles, www.riv.ca, or call them at 1-888-848-8240.

Question #2 - None of our current insurance carriers we work with will insure a vehicle with a rebuilt title, which is typically referred to as a salvage title. Even though the vehicle may appear to be mechanically sound, many insurance companies feel that there is too much of a risk in insuring the vehicle with that type of title.
