QuestionInsurance Question  My adult daughter had two at-fault car accidents (rear-ending others) within a few months of each other, the most recent being two and a half years ago. The only car insurance she could get after the 2nd accident was high risk. How long does she have until she no longer has to remain on high risk insurance? She lives in Hudson, Wisconsin (a border town near the Twin Cities). The first accident occurred in WI, second accident was in St Paul, MN.

In Wisconsin dates and types of traffic convictions, accidents, restrictions, and withdrawals are all recorded onto your driver record abstract. Driver record entries are retained for the preceding five years; however, certain convictions can result in a driver record being retained indefinitely. To find out which ones this would be, contact the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

According to the WI Commissioner of Insurance, drivers in Wisconsin can be classified by car insurance companies based on a number of different characteristics including, but not limited to, age and gender, marital status, where the vehicle is garaged, driving record, make and model of vehicle, prior insurance coverage and annual miles driven.

History has shown that drivers with certain characteristics, such as a poor driving record, have a greater chance of being involved in an accident, and the drivers in those classifications must pay higher rates. Preferred

Typically drivers can get insurance from a preferred company instead of a non-standard (high risk) insurer when they have had a clean driving record for the previous three years to five years. To find out for certain how long your daughter's accidents will affect her insurance rates, and thus classifying her as a high risk, I would suggest contacting the Wisconsin Commissioner of Insurance.
