QuestionInsurance Question  Will a speeding ticket in NY (was going 26 mph over the limit) be transferred to a Maryland license?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

New York and Maryland both take part in the Drivers License Compact and thus New York's court or DMV will inform the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration of your ticket in NYS.

Speeding 26 mph over the speed limit in New York is a 6 point offense if you have a NY driver's license. Speeding in Maryland has violation points as follows:

  • Speeding in excess of the posted speed limit by 10 miles an hour or more is 2 points
  • Speeding in excess of the posted speed limit by 30 miles an hour or more is 5 points
  • Speeding in excess of a posted speed limit of 65 miles an hour by 20 miles an hour or more is 5 points

The Maryland driver's manual currently states that once the MVA receives ticket information from another state they treat it as if the violation occurred in state. If the MD MVA does treat the NYS speeding ticket as an in state offense than it would go on your driving record and could be assigned points.

To find out for certain if this speeding ticket will go onto your MD driving record and if points will be assessed, check with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.
