QuestionInsurance Question  I filed an insurance claim for flood damage and the whole engine had to be replaced. What if the final repairs cost more than the original estimate given by the adjuster? Does the insurance company pay the difference or do I have to pay the difference out of my pocket?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

If the final repair costs are more than the original estimate given by the repair shop, or estimated by the insurance adjuster, normally the insurance company will adjust their figures to cover the difference or work with the repair shop and resolve the difference in costs. If the insurance company is working with the repair shop or mechanic directly then you may not need to be involved with the extra monies need for the repairs.

If you believe the expense to fix the vehicle is going to exceed the original estimate you should discuss this issue with your insurance company regarding your comprehensive claim that was placed to cover the flood damage to your car's engine.

If the adjuster is unaware of the additional costs then he or she should be informed so that a supplemental estimate, that includes the extra expenses needed to fix the engine, can be made and if necessary the insurance company should pay more for the repairs.
