QuestionInsurance Question  My wife and I are currently missionaries living in Nicaragua. We have a concern that when we move back to Virginia it will be difficult to obtain affordable car insurance since it will appear that we didn't have insurance during the previous six months (we do have auto insurance here in Nicaragua). I lived in Nicaragua in the past and when I moved back to the States I couldn't get affordable insurance for this very reason. The only thing that saved me then was that I was able to be added to my then fiance's insurance. Is there any way to get around this problem? I have never had an accident or a ticket and find it crazy that my past doesn't matter simply because I was out of the country. Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated!

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

If you and your wife kept your Virginia driver's license valid it should not be an issue to re-start up insurance on your vehicle(s). Being without insurance during your time in Nicaragua may void discounts on insurance, like ones for carrying continual coverage with one company or perhaps a renewal discount but it is not a surcharge by most insurance carriers.

Being out of the country for 6 months should not have that large of an impact on obtaining insurance but the reality is that insurance companies will take the fact that you were without US auto insurance into account when rating you. If you and your wife both have spotless, clean driving records though this should help your insurance rates as a while.

To make up for the extra insurance expense you may have for not having previous coverage in the last 6 months you may see if other discounts are available to you such as safe driver, a discount for the safety features on your vehicle, etc. The Bureau of Insurance for Virginia states that successful completion of a driver education or defensive driving course may also allow you to receive a discount on your premium.
