QuestionInsurance Question  Will a seat belt ticket in Illinois cause insurance rates to rise for a teenager?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

A ticket for a seat belt violation that goes on your MVR, which a conviction for this offense does appear on an Illinois driver's record, is considered minor by most insurance companies but could still increase the rates of a teenager depending upon an insurance company's rating system. With some companies, a small infraction may remove discounts and with other companies it may impose a surcharge. The teenager or his/her parents would need to check with their insurance provider to find out specifics about how the company's rating system works.

For more information on a safety belt ticket in Illinois, it is likely that the teen was cited for a violation of the IL Seat Belt Act, Illinois Vehicle Code 12-603.1, which is non-point offense. The IL seat belt law requires states that all front seat occupants are required to be protected by a safety belt or safety restraint system, regardless of age. Passengers under age 16 regardless of location in the vehicle must be protected by a safety belt or restraint system.

During the first six months of a teen within the graduated licensing process (or until they reach the age of 18, whichever occurs sooner) are limited to only one passenger under the age of 20 (except immediate family which includes siblings or children of the driver). All passengers under age 19 (changed from 18 as of January 2006), with a driver under age 18, regardless of location in the vehicle must be belted.
