QuestionInsurance Question  If my husband has an international drivers license and we recently bought a car in Colorado it is in my name. Can we get insurance that will cover him also without his Colorado Drivers License?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

If your husband is in the process of changing over his international or foreign license for a US license in Colorado then you may be able to get auto insurance for him to drive the car bought in your name. Many insurance companies, including the ones we work with, will allow someone with an international license to start a policy but will require the person to obtain a State license within 30 days for the insurance to stay in effect.

If your husband does not plan on acquiring a Colorado driver's license then it will likely be more difficult for him to find auto insurance for him to drive your vehicle. You may be able to find car insurance through a specialized insurer though. If he does plan on receiving a CO license, he can contact the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles to find out how to start the licensing process.
