QuestionInsurance Question  How long do points stay on your driving record for failing to stop at a red light?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

The length of time points stay on your driving record due to traffic offenses, such as failure to stop at a red light, will depend upon your state's laws and regulations.

For example, not stopping for a red light in Virginia is 3 points. In VA the violation conviction stays on motor vehicle record for the 3 years but the demerit points remain on the record for only 2 years from the date that the offense was committed. So in this state, and in some other states, the dates that the points are removed from your driving record are not related to the date that the conviction is removed from your driving history.

Typically you can obtain information on your state's points system and driving record from contacting your local Department of Motor Vehicles or from their website.
