QuestionInsurance Question  I recently drove my 02 Grand Jeep Cherokee Ltd across a river which turned out to be about 3 ft deep. I made it across, but just as I did the Jeep stalled, never to start again. The Jeep dealer here stated the engine was seized and it would cost $8-9k to replace. Does this type of incident qualify under my Comprehensive Coverage, other then collision?

You will need to contact your insurance company and read through the terms of your policy to determine if this situation will be covered under your comprehensive coverage. Normally comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car if it is stolen; or damaged by flood, fire, or animals.

You should report this loss to your insurance company and discuss the details with their licensed claims adjuster. Insurance company policy guidelines and state laws of what is required of insurance companies vary so that is why you will need to find out from your specific insurance provider if they will cover the damages to your engine or find it to be outside of the realm of your coverage.

Most policies won't pay for 100% of the damages to the vehicle, unless you have replacement cost coverage. The company will determine and pay the ACV. Some policies may have a betterment clause.

Betterment is the term used when property is repaired and in the end the property is in a better condition than before the incident. This can occur with any claim, the carrier may ask the insured to contribute to the cost of the repair. The contribution is referred to as betterment because the policy only covers the damages, but the end result is "better" and beyond the policy scope.
