QuestionInsurance Question  I will be in New York working for the next 6 months. I have a car from Montreal, Canada (Quebec plates) and a Canadian drivers license. Can I get car insurance from a company here in NY while keeping my Canadian plates? I know someone in a similar situation who got it (cannot remember the name of the insurer) all he had to do was get a New Jersey license without changing the plates.

Insurance companies' guidelines differ but typically US insurance companies will require a vehicle to be registered in the United States in order for the car to be insured by them. Insurance providers will also normally want you to also have a US license, instead of a foreign one, even from Canada.

According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to register a vehicle imported from another country it first must clear Customs and Border Protection, the car must also comply with the NYS safety and emissions standards and you must provide US Customs and Border Protection documents and proof of ownership documents to the NYSDMV.

The NYS DMV also will give you information on how to obtain a New York driver's license. When you are ready to acquire car insurance for your vehicle, click here for a quote.
