QuestionInsurance Question  My 22 year old daughter has a Washington State driver's license. She has been going to college in Massachusetts, and is about to graduate. Until now, she has not owned a car, but she hopes to purchase one in the next few weeks. Her plans are to stay in MA for at least 5 months before determining where to make her permanent residence. I want her to have her own policy. Should she get a policy in WA or MA?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

If your daughter is going to buy a motor vehicle, register it and drive it in Massachusetts then she should obtain a MA insurance policy to cover the vehicle. If after 5 months she moves to some other state then she can register and insure the vehicle in her new state of residency.

Your daughter can obtain information on how to register a car in Massachusetts by contacting the MA Registry of Motor Vehicles. She may also need to find out from the RMV if she will need to exchange her Washington State license for a Massachusetts driver's license after she graduates from college since she may then be considered a resident of MA.
