QuestionInsurance Question  If I'm hit in a shopping mall parking lot and not notified by the person that hits me, which makes it a hit and run, is that a comprehensive claim or a collision claim?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

If you were hit by another vehicle in the shopping mall parking lot and you are unable to make a claim against the at-fault party because they are unknown, then you should be able to place a claim against your own collision coverage.

Collision coverages typically cover damages to your car when your car hits, or is hit by, another vehicle, or other object. This coverage pays to fix your vehicle less the deductible you choose at the inception on your policy.

This would be considered a collision claim most likely if you can show that it was another car that hit your car and caused the damages. Comprehensive coverage covers your vehicle for losses resulting from incidents other than collision. For example, comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car if it is stolen; or damaged by flood, fire, or animals.

If you can find the at-fault party, you would claim it against their property damage liability coverage.
