QuestionInsurance Question  What happens if you get into an accident where you hit the another vehicles bumper, about $2000.00 approx damage on his vehicle $1500.00 approx for yours, and you currently have your G2? The basis of the story is a bus cut one guy off and he stopped but you failed to stop fast enough and touched the back of his bumper. There was no charge and it is going through insurance companies. What happens to the insurance rate on your car? What happens with the G2 licence (ex. taken away) and will a ticket be sent in the mail (ex. most likely, no, yes)?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

It will be up to your insurance company to determine if your rates will be increased or not due to this at-fault accident. Typically the premium you pay depends at least partly on your driving record.

Your driving history will now include this at-fault accident. Other things that will be part of your driving history and may affect your insurance premium is the length of time you have been licensed to drive, whether or not you have taken a driver-training course that your insurance company recognizes, and driving convictions (such as: speeding and impaired or careless driving).

Normally in Ontario if you have had at-fault accidents over the last six years, or a number of minor driving convictions or even one major or serious conviction over the last three years, your premium will be higher.

With regards to if a ticket will be sent in the mail, you stated that there was no charge at the scene of the accident. If that is true then usually you would not be sent a ticket in the mail. To be certain you can check with the law enforcement agency that showed up at the accident scene and took the report and make sure you will not be issued a ticket for your involvement in the accident.

To find out if this accident will affect your G2 licence in anyway (demerit points, suspension, etc) check with the Ministry of Transportation.
