QuestionInsurance Question  How long does a speeding violation stay on your driving record in Louisiana if received out of state, and how does it affect your insurance rates?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Louisiana is part of the Drivers License Compact so it is likely that any speeding ticket received out of state would be reported back to the LA Office of Motor Vehicles.

The office of Motor Vehicles states that your official driving record (ODR) lists various law violations and the retention period for violations varies depending on the type of violation. The type of violations and their retention period on your Louisiana driving history are as follows:

  • DWI, Vehicle Negligent Injury and Out-of-Service convictions remain on the record for 10 years from the date of conviction.
  • Other major traffic convictions (suspendable/disqualifying violations) remain on the record for 5 years from the date of conviction.
  • Minor traffic convictions remain on the record for 3 years from the date of conviction.
  • Accidents that are suspended for Financial Responsibility remain on the record until the accident is reinstated.

The LA OMV does not appear to differentiate between in state and out of state tickets so your out of state speeding ticket probably falls under a minor traffic conviction and thus be kept on your record for 3 years.

How this out of state ticket will affect your insurance rates will depend upon your insurance company's rating system. To find out about this system contact your insurance agent or the Louisiana Department of Insurance since insurance carriers must file their rates with this state insurance regulatory body.
