Insurance company policy terms and guidelines differ from one company to the next but normally a standard car insurance policy covers you vehicle when you drive in the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico. Not all insurance policies will list Puerto Rico so you may need to ask specifically if your auto insurance coverage will extend to PR. Some policies also include US territories as part of your coverage area.
To see if your current insurance policy will cover you in Canada and Puerto Rico read over your policy and/or ask your agent. If you are in the process of obtaining car insurance then make certain that the US and these two areas will be covered by the policy.
Also find out from your insurance agent if they need to provide you will additional documents to take with you to Canada and Puerto Rico. For example when going to Canada you should ask your agent to provide you with a yellow Non-resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card to carry in the car. This will show Canadian officials that your insurance company agreed to provide coverage of not less than the minimum required in the area of Canada in which the car is traveling.
