QuestionInsurance Question  I received a ticket in Virginia and live in West Virginia and hold a WV license. Will VA report that violation to WV? Thanks.

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Virginia and West Virginia are both members of the Drivers License Compact meaning that once you are convicted of your VA ticket the Virginia courts will report the violation back to the West Virginia DMV.

The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has decided to assess points for all traffic violation convictions, regardless of what state they are committed in. So traffic violations you receive in other states (like Virginia) will become part of your WV driving record and points will be assessed.

Points in West Virginia are assigned according to the severity of the offense. Points for a given infraction remain on a driver's record for two years after the date of the conviction. The infraction itself remains on the driver's record for seven years.
