QuestionInsurance Question  If a person gets a speeding ticket in Florida and lives in Connecticut, is the person obligated to pay the fine? If the fine is not paid, are there any consequences?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Florida and Connecticut are both members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) and Non Resident Violator Compact (NRVC). The DLC requires member states to report back to a person's state of licensing any moving violation convictions. Once this is done the home state can place it on the motorist's driving record, assign points, etc according to their state laws.

The NRVC requires member states to suspend the driver’s license of those who get traffic tickets for moving violations in other states and fail to pay them.

So if you fail to pay or otherwise take care of the Florida speeding ticket the FL courts should advise the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles so that your CT driver's license would be suspended. There may be other consequences as well depending upon FL and CT state laws.
