QuestionInsurance Question  My husband is an avid car fan and we have several high end cars which mostly sit in our storage until they are used (some only a couple of times a year). We want each car to be protected but it seems outrageous to spend thousands of dollars to insure a car that is rarely driven. Is there any other options we have?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

You do have options as car collectors top obtain specialty insurance for your high end cars that are garaged or placed in storage for a majority of the year.

You can obtain a quote on Classic Cars and Collectibles with our partner Safeco or call them directly at 1-800-936-0356 to see what special rates they may have to offer you on your vehicles.

Information can also be found on this type of auto insurance in the "Other Products" section of our site.

Collector car insurance is typically less than standard auto insurance since collector vehicles are driven on a limited basis and spend most of their time in the garage or storage thus the risk of loss to collector vehicles is much lower than the risk posed to insurers by regularly-driven vehicles.

To keep collector rates low, most insurers will place certain usage restrictions on insured vehicles, such as:

  • cannot be used for everyday driving;
  • cannot be driven more than 2,500 miles per year (though some will up the mileage limit to 5,000 for a slightly higher premium);
  • must be garage-kept.

Other restrictions or limitations could be that all drivers need to be over 25 years old and you must show proof of having another vehicle that you use as your regular “driver”.
