QuestionInsurance Question  I have a WA state drivers license and received a speeding ticket in the state of CA. This is my first ticket in either state. Is driving class (in CA) an option for me, and will it off my record? If so, how do I proceed?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Washington and California are both members of the Drivers License Compact so if you are convicted of the California speeding ticket then Washington's Department of Licensing (DOL) would be informed of the violation.

To find out if you are eligible for California traffic school and to see if this will keep the CA speeding ticket from being reported back to Washington state contact the court listed on the citation.

It may be possible with your out of state license to get the CA court to agree to let you take a traffic school. For example the Mendocino County traffic court site notes that if you hold a valid driver license from a state other than California, you may complete a home study or Internet course for eligible offenses. The course provider must be listed on the On-Line and Home study Traffic School list provided by the court.

In this county, and likely other jurisdictions within California, to request approval to take a home study or Internet course, you must submit the following three items to the Court by the due date shown on your citation or courtesy notice:

  1. A copy of your driving record from your state's Motor Vehicle Department,
  2. the required fine/bail and fees, including the $29 non-refundable traffic school fee, and
  3. a declaration stating that you have not attended traffic school anywhere in the United States for a citation received within 18 months prior to your current citation

Once your request has been granted, you will have sixty (60) days to complete the course. Your completion certificate will be sent electronically to the Court.
